The inauguration of President Hugo Chavez, set to take place on January 10th, has been postponed indefinitely due to the president's health condition. Chavez still stays at a hospital in Havana.
The news was announced by the chairman of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Venezuela, Diosdado Kabelos. According to him, physical activity was prohibited for Chavez after he had received another surgery to remove a malignant tumor.
Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro said that the inauguration ceremony was a mere formality. Chavez does not have to be present at the ceremony. The Supreme Court can approve Chavez as president too.
The Venezuelan president received the last operation to remove a malignant tumor in December 2012 in Havana. During the treatment, Chavez handed the administration to Nicolas Maduro, having asked Venezuelan citizens to vote for him in case of possible early elections. After surgery, the president had a respiratory infection, which led to complications. The country's opposition pushes for new presidential elections.
