Syria will not abandon its Islam and ideology

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited a mosque in Damascus, where the faithful gathered for a solemn prayer to celebrate the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, reports NTV. Assad was shown on local television on Aug 20. The last time al-Assad appeared in public was on July 4th, when he gave a speech in the parliament, Vesti FM said.

The Syrian leader appeared on air with Prime Minister Wael al-Halki. Vice-President Farouk al-Shara, who was said to have escaped from the country even though the Syrian authorities subsequently rebutted the information, was not seen near Assad.

The video showed Assad sitting in the mosque with his legs crossed and listening to the sermon. In the sermon, Syria was named a victim of the conspiracy between the U.S., Israel and other Western and Arab states, Vedomosti said. In addition, the sermon said that Syria would not abandon its Islam, ideology and determination.
