Lithuania intends to keep the announced position on transit to Kaliningrad

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Department of Information and Culture issued a statement in the context of the upcoming Russia-EU summit.

Lithuanian Foreign Ministry insists that Lithuania will maintain its previously announced position on the issue of transit to Kaliningrad region (Kaliningrad is a Russian enclave in the Baltic region). The fundamentals of this position are -- respect of Lithuanian sovereignty, effective control of borders, equality of rights among Russian and Lithuanian citizens.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry points out that the new decisions should not become an obstacle for Lithuania's accession to Schengen Treaty territorial space, and they also should not impose any additional financial obligations on the country.

The statement points out that Lithuania will respect only those agreements between Russia and the EU that would not violate the stated principles.
