Workers enter Japan's Fukushima nuclear reactor building

Workers enter Japan's Fukushima nuclear reactor building. 44241.jpegWorkers entered a reactor building at Japan's stricken nuclear plant Thursday for the first time since an explosion hit the facility a day after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, officials said.

Wearing gas masks and protective suits with oxygen tanks on their backs, two workers stepped into the building housing reactor number one -- one of four reactors badly damaged at the Fukushima Daiichi plant -- to gauge radiation levels, Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to Tokyo Electric Power Compancy (Tepco), which runs the plant, the workers are currently engaged in efforts to install ventilation systems in reactor one for filtering out radioactive particles.

Earlier Thursday a Tepco spokesman told reporters that 12 workers in three groups of four each will work inside the reactor building in shifts of 10 minutes."Groups of four will go in one-by-one to install the ducts. They'll be working in a narrow space," he said, according to RTT News.
