Pipeline break triggers largest oil spill in Canada's Alberta in 30 years

Pipeline break triggers largest oil spill in Canada's Alberta in 30 years. 44219.jpegA pipeline break north of Peace River has turned out to be the largest oil spill in Alberta in more than 30 years, provincial regulators confirmed Tuesday.

Approximately 28,000 barrels of oil were leaked after the Rainbow pipeline ruptured last week, the Energy Resources Conservation Board said, according to Global Edmonton.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board says the spill is seven kilometres from the nearest home and 300 metres from any runoff or flowing water.

However, the oil has soaked metres deep into the soil and the cleanup effort is expected to take weeks.

Regulators are investigating how the leak occurred, CTV.ca reports.
