At Least 175 Killed in Torrential Downpours in Southern China

Heavy rain across a swathe of southern China over the last week has killed at least 175 people and left 107 missing, as rivers broke their banks and landslides cut off road and rail links, state media said on Monday.

Torrential downpours have triggered flash floods, inundated crops, disrupted traffic and telecommunications, forcing the evacuation of more than 1 million people, according to Ministry of Civil Affairs figures, Reuters reports.

The downpour that began June 13 triggered flash floods, inundated rivers and cropland besides disrupting traffic and telecommunication facilities in large swathes of southern China causing estimated economic losses of up to 14.5 billion yuan ($2.1 bn) and causing the evacuation of 800,000 persons.

The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFCDRH) said 178,000 homes were damaged, while 68,000 houses collapsed under the impact of the rains and 535,500 hectares of crops were destroyed, state-run Xinhua news agency said Sunday, RTTNews informs.
