A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 struck southeast of Taiwan on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There were no tsunami warnings issued but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said local tsunamis on coastlines within 100 km (60 miles) of the quake's centre were possible, TVNZ says.

According to MarketWatch, the quake was recorded about 270 kilometers or about 169 miles east-southeast of T'ai-tung in Taiwan and about the same distance north east of Basco in Philippines' Batan islands, at a depth of about 10 kilometers, the USGS said.

There is no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
