Plane Kills Man On The Beach in Emergency Landing

A 38-year-old jogger from Georgia is dead after a single-engine plane making an emergency landing hit him as he ran on a South Carolina beach listening to his iPod.

The coroner said Tuesday that Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., apparently did not hear the troubled plane that struck him from behind on Hilton Head Island on Monday. The plane had lost its propeller and the pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield.

Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen says he plans to conduct an autopsy. He says Jones was married and had two children, The Associated Press reported.

According to a report in UPI, the pilot tried to land at Hilton Head Airport but made an emergency beach landing after leaking oil obscured the windshield and the propeller came off, said Joheida Fister, a spokeswoman for the Hilton Head Fire and Rescue Division.

"They were really shook up," Fister said of the pilot and his passenger.

The plane struck and killed a man on the beach, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said.
