Leon Medical Center installs new 6 million dollars electronic medical records system

By Anastasia Tomazhenkova: Leon Medical Center has begun installing a $6 million electronic medical records system in its five Medicare health clinics in Miami-Dade County.

The spokeswoman claimed the privately held company bought the system from Pennsylvania-based NextGen, and expects to have it completely integrated into its clinics by December. It spent $3 million on the program and another $3 million on the equipment.

Leon Medical is scanning existing patient records into the system. It will include real-time access to lab results and imaging, as well as electronic scheduling and tracking of appointments. Its physicians will be able to see their patients' data from remote locations. Eventually, patients will be given access to their records through a secure Web portal.

Leon Medical only sees patients on the Medicare Advantage plan offered by HealthSpring. The Nashville, Tenn.-based managed care provider bought that 25,700-member HMO from Leon Medical in October for $355 million and 2.7 million shares of HealthSpring common stock.
