Dolphin dies of severe tracheal infection at Brookfield Zoo

A six-year-old dolphin has died at the Brookfield Zoo died Sunday. The reason of the death was a severe tracheal infection.

No signs of infection were discovered in December when staff noticed that his suppressed appetite. Anyway, Micco was placed on antibiotics and other medication and closely monitored as a precaution.

But he began showing the signs of illness this month again. Zoo workers were trying to save his life using CPR and heart stimulants, but it appeared useless.

Brookfield Zoo opened on July 1, 1934 and quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches, instead of cages, to separate animals from visitors. The zoo was also the first in America to exhibit giant pandas, one of which (Su-Lin) has been taxidermied and put on display in Chicago 's Field Museum of Natural History. In 1960, Brookfield Zoo built the nation's first fully-indoor dolphin exhibit.
