Leaders of France and Germany to attend summit on financial stability in world's markets

The leaders of France and Germany were invited to London for a summit on financial stability in the world's markets.

French President Nicholas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are expected to attend the meeting in London in early January, Brown's office said Tuesday, adding the precise date was still being worked out.

Brown told lawmakers Tuesday the meeting would deal with ways to improve transparency for investors, how to manage risk, and the role of credit rating agencies ahead of a European Council meeting scheduled for spring 2008.

The announcement follows a joint call for reform of the global financial markets issued by the three European leaders in October.

Sarkozy's office on Tuesday announced a formal visit by the French President to Britain on March 26-28 as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II.
