Lufthansa AG to expand route network in China

Deutsche Lufthansa AG, German airline, plans to expand its route network from three to five destinations in China next year ahead of the summer Olympic games in Beijing.

The carrier will begin routes from Frankfurt to Nanjing and from Munich to Shenyang, alongside its existing services to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The two new connections will both be operated by an Airbus A340-300 seating 221 passengers.

Including the new routes, Lufthansa will operate 58 flights weekly from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs to China and Hong Kong.

Separately, Lufthansa said that its November passenger load factor - the amount of seats taken up during the period - rose 1.2 percentage points to 75.8 percent.

During the month the carrier increased capacity by 5 percent, while actual passenger numbers climbed 6.7 percent to 4.6 million.

Lufthansa shares dipped 0.1 percent to €18.50 (US$27.15) in Frankfurt.
