Police arrest suspect in connection with Sarajevo airport theft

A man suspected of links to the theft of $1.9 million from the Sarajevo airport was ruled to be detained for a month.

Suad Glavinic was detained over the weekend and is suspected of involvement in organized crime, aggravated robbery and endangering the safety of air traffic, the court said in a statement.

Four men wearing police uniforms and armed with automatic weapons stormed Sarajevo International Airport's cargo zone last Thursday and stole $1.9 million belonging to the ABS Bank, a member of the Austrian Erste Bank Group.

A police officer guarding four bags of money was held at gunpoint while the thieves loaded the cash into a car. The getaway vehicle and the automatic weapons were later found burned at an abandoned military base near the capital. The Sarajevo fire brigade said it had trouble extinguishing the fire, as the flames had caused rounds to be fired from inside the vehicle.

The court said that Glavinic was an employee of the Cargo Center and that he and an accomplice left the door to the Cargo Center open to allow the robbers to enter and take the money.
