U.S. soldier dies of injuries after vehicle explosion west of Baghdad

A vehicle blast killed an American soldier during a recovery operation west of Baghdad, the military reported.

The soldier

died of injuries sustained in the explosion Monday during a vehicle recovery operation in Anbar province, a former insurgent stronghold that has seen a recent drop in violence, according to a statement.

Two other service members were wounded and transported to a U.S. military medical facility for treatment, it said.

The brief statement gave no further details, saying the incident was under investigation.

The death raised to at least 3,883 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
