Three killed by police, three arrested in deadly Congress blast case in Philippines

Three people, including a suspected Muslim militant, were shot dead by Philippine police and three other arrested in a raid Thursday linked to a deadly blast outside the legislature.

The blast on Tuesday killed a Muslim lawmaker, Rep. Wahab Akbar, and three other people. Police said they suspect it was an assassination or revenge because Akbar had suspected links with al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf militants, then backed military attacks against them.

In the raid on a suburban Manila house Thursday, police said they discovered vehicle plates and other evidence linking the men to the blast.

Police officers and army intelligence operatives were trying to serve an arrest warrant when they were fired upon by a suspected Abu Sayyaf militant, Pakir Said, said metropolitan Manila police chief Geary Barias.

They shot back, killing the suspect and two others, including a woman. Three other men inside the house in suburban Quezon City, about a kilometer (half a mile) from the House of Representatives, surrendered and were taken in, Barias said.
