Ashley Cole to miss England's next European Championship qualifier

Ashley Cole will not take part in England's next European Championship qualifier due to his ankle injury.

Cole was hurt during England's 3-0 win over Estonia at Wembley on Saturday. He fell awkwardly after attempting to block a cross and was carried off on a stretcher in the 50th minute.

England's Football Association did not describe the exact nature of Cole's injury, but said Sunday "he will not recover in time for the visit to Moscow."

England plays Russia on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough's Luke Young will join the squad as a replacement. Young played the last of his seven internationals against Argentina in November 2005.

Phil Neville initially took Cole's left back place against Estonia, but then moved to the right, with Joleon Lescott playing on the left.

Lescott, who was playing his first international, had replaced Rio Ferdinand at half time.

England can qualify for next year's tournament with a win at Russia.
