Anna Bessonova wins World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

The all-around title at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships was given to Anna Bessonova from Ukraine.

Bessonova won with 73.950 points. Vera Sessina of Russia was second, and favorite Olga Kapranova of Russia was third.

It was the first gold for the 23-year-old Bessonova, who came second in the clubs and ribbons events on Wednesday.

"I didn't expect to win the gold," she said. "Now all I want is two days rest. I hope to achieve the best possible at the Beijing Olympics."

Kapranova, the defending champion who led in qualifying, scored 70.700 points after dropping her hoop in the opening routine, fumbling a club catch and going out of bounds in the ribbon.

The first 20 gymnasts qualify for next year's Beijing Olympics, while the International Gymnastics Federation allocated three wildcards to Xiao Yiming of China, Odette Richard of South Africa and Naazmi Johnston of Australia. A fourth wildcard will be announced by the IOC.
