Igor Andreev upset U.S. Open semifinalist Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 Friday in the opening singles match to give defending champion Russia a 1-0 lead over Germany in the Davis Cup semifinals.

Nikolay Davydenko was to face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second singles on clay at the Olympic indoor stadium.

Russia won its second Davis Cup title last season over Argentina.

Germany hasn't beaten Russia since 1993, when it won its fourth Davis Cup title. The Germans reached the semifinals the next two years, but lost to Russia both times. The Russians again beat Germany in the first round in 1999.
