Blaz Sliskovic resigned as Bosnia coach on Thursday, one day after his team lost 3-1 to Hungary in qualifying for the European Championship.
Sliskovic had promised that Bosnia would win its first two qualifiers. His team beat Malta 5-2 last Saturday, but after losing Wednesday he said he feels "a great obligation to withdraw from the team."
"This decision (to resign) was very hard for me, especially after four wonderful years with the Bosnian team" Slikovic said.
Hungary led in the 36th minute when Szabolcs Huszti converted from the penalty spot after a foul from Emir Spahic, who was sent off two minutes later for arguing with the referee, AP reports.
"It wasn't a penalty and this decided the match," Slikovic said. "A few minutes later, Spahic was sent off and all our plans went down the drain."
Hungary doubled its lead in the 47th when Zoltan Gera netted from 8 meters following a corner.
Two minutes later, Pal Dardai's powerful 12-meter shot went past Bosnia goalkeeper Kenan Hasagic.
Zvjezdan Misimovic pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after a handball offense in the 62nd.
"It just did not function and I am to blame," Sliskovic said Wednesday of his team. "I am the guilty one, but if we were to play again tomorrow I would go with the same tactics again."
