Olympic torch travels to diamond permafrost in Siberia

 

Trying to make each step in the Olympic torch relay unique, in Yakutia, it was decided to deliver the Olympic Torch to the Yakut diamond mine near the town of Mirny on November 8. 

The torch was solemnly carried along the bottom of a quarry in the company of several giant BelAZ trucks that are traditionally used as the main transportation vehicle in mining the precious rock. Afterwards, the torch was taken to the city's main square.

On, November 9, the main symbol of the Sochi Games 2014 will visit Yakutsk, where it is going to ride a reindeer and dog sledding to the complex titled "Kingdom of Permafrost."

"The route the Olympic torch relay in the capital of the republic will take place almost all over the city - it is more than 20 kilometers long. Eighty residents of Yakutia will have the honor to carry the torch in the capital of the republic of Yakutia," the Minister for Sports of the Republic, Mikhail Gulyaev, told reporters at a press conference.
