Nizhny Novgorod's Rowing Channel to become national sports attraction

The head of the Nizhny Novgorod administration, Oleg Kondrashov, approved the concept for the development of the territory of the Rowing Channel. The administration of the city said that the channel could attract professional rowers and foreign yachting tourists.

Engineers put forward a suggestion to extend the bar of the channel to connect it with the island and build berths for vessels, as well as a yacht club there.

The beach, which enjoys great popularity among the local residents, will be equipped on the opposite side of the channel. The project also stipulates a special game zone for children to bathe and play.

The project also includes the construction of two large parking lots - between the bases of the springboards and the Pechersky Convent. Another parking area will be organized near the bridge to Podnovye. Restaurants along the embankment will be preserved, although they all are supposed to be built as capital constructions that do not contradict to each other architecturally.

The Nizhny Novgorod administration sees the Rowing Channel as the leisure territory in the city. It can also serve as the center to attract professional athletes and foreign tourists on yachts. The water area of the Rowing Channel is the only one in Russia which allows to conduct rowing competitions on the international level.

The city will have to build special sports constructions on the embankment to accept such tournaments. It will be necessary to deepen the bottom and relocate the helipad and the beach. As a result, the complex may then operate as a year-round sports base. Rowers will be able to use it in summer, whereas ski jumpers will enjoy the facilities during wintertime.
