Algeria threatened the US defence throughout the first half, but the busier goalkeeper was Mbolhi, who saved a shot by Gomez on 7’, again on 21’, Dempsey on 31’ and 42’. Howard was called into action once, saving from Matmour on 38’.

On 53’, Yebda headed over, then at the other end, Mbolhi saved from Feilhaber on 65’. Ten minutes later Howard denied the dangerous Algerian sub, Ghezzal. Right at the end, Donovan scored on 91’, sending the USA through as group leaders.
