Italian cycling federation to decide upon those involved in Operation Puerto doping scandal

The Italian cycling federation is going to discuss sanctions, if any, cyclist Giampaolo Caruso and former team director Alessandro Kalc are to receive for their alleged involvement in the Operation Puerto doping scandal.

Italian Olympic Committee doping prosecutors want the Lampre-Fondital rider banned for two years for "the use or attempted use of a banned substance or method" relating to the scandal.

Kalc faces a lifetime ban from being licensed by the federation for his association with the Spanish doctor at the center of the case.

Kalc, who used to run a small team from Trieste called Devin but who is not longer on the federation's books, has said he knew Eufemiano Fuentes through "personal reasons" only.

More than 50 riders and other athletes have been linked to Operation Puerto since Spanish police found bags of blood, blood transfusion equipment, steroids, hormones and the endurance-boosting substance EPO at clinics in Madrid and Zaragoza in May 2006.
