Maxim Staviski accused of drunk driving accident

World ice dancing champion Maxim Staviski has been charged over a drunk driving accident where a man died and a woman fell in a coma.

The 30-year-old skater was charged with drunk driving and causing a fatal accident.

"The sentence for such a crime could be from three to 10 years in prison," public prosecutor Svetlozar Kostov said.

No trial date has been set, and Staviski has not been taken into custody.

Staviski's sport utility vehicle collided with a car in the oncoming lane in the Black Sea city of Burgas on Aug. 5. The crash killed a 23-year-old man and seriously injured his 18-year-old female companion, who remains in a coma.

Police said Staviski's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Staviski and Albena Denkova won their second consecutive ice dancing title at the World Figure Skating Championships in March in Tokyo.
