An insane woman will receive psychiatric treatment in prison for killing her daughters and the pets. She said that the devil told her to commit this slaughter.

A jury last month found Jennifer Kukla guilty of first-degree murder but mentally ill in the slashing deaths of 8-year-old Alexandra and 5-year-old Ashley in February.

Police discovered the bodies and those of three dogs and a pet mouse at the family's home about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Detroit after being called there by one of Kukla's sisters.

Three psychiatrists called by the defense testified that Kukla, 31, was legally insane when the girls were killed. Assistant prosecutor William Cataldo countered that Kukla had managed to ignore voices telling her to take her own life.

Steven Freers, Kukla's attorney, told the jury that she wanted to protect the girls against someone she thought was going to break into their home, rape and torture her children.

Officers testified that Kukla said she heard the voice of the devil telling her to kill the children and the animals.

Prosecutors have said Kukla will receive psychiatric treatment behind bars.
