One runner dead and 250 hospitalized in Chicago Marathon

The Chicago Marathon ended Sunday with one runner dead and 250 others hospitalized due to heat and humidity.

Chad Schieber, 35, collapsed while running on the South Side and was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m. at a Veteran's Affairs hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy on the Midland, Michigan, man was scheduled for Monday.

Another 250 people were taken to area hospitals because of heat-related ailments. Organizers closed the second half of the course just before noon, four hours after the annual race started and with temperatures already at 23 degrees celsius (73 degrees fahrenheit) with 86 percent humidity. By 10 a.m., temperatures had already reached a race-record 31 degrees celsius (88 degrees fahrenheit).

The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon is a major marathon held yearly in Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Alongside the Boston, New York, London and Berlin Marathons, it is one of the five World Marathon Majors. The October 7, 2007 running was the 30th Anniversary running of the race. It has been run every year since the September 25, 1977, under the original name the "Mayor Daley Marathon" drew a field of 4200 runners
