Thieves grab actress Dunst's US$13K bag from her hotel room

Thieves have snatched a US$13,000 handbag and other items from "Spider-Man" star Kirsten Dunst's penthouse suite at a posh Manhattan hotel earlier this month.

Thieves slipped into the actress' rooms at the SoHo Grand Hotel on Aug. 9, court records show. Dunst, who was in town to shoot scenes for a forthcoming film called "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People," had left early that morning, according to the records.

Darting into the suite through an open door, the thieves grabbed designer bags, US$2,500 in cash, credit and ID cards, two digital cameras, a cell phone and an iPod music player, court records show. A surveillance camera captured the burglars leaving the hotel with the items, according to a court complaint.

One suspect, Jarrod Beinerman, 33, was being held on US$50,000 bond after being arraigned in a Manhattan court Wednesday on burglary and grand larceny charges. He was arrested after going to a Brooklyn court for an unrelated case Tuesday.

Beinerman's lawyer told a judge Wednesday that the surveillance camera showed his client was not carrying anything in his hands when he left the SoHo Grand. The lawyer, James Kirschner, said Beinerman had heard a movie was being filmed at the hotel and "went there to check out what was going on."

Authorities have since recovered credit cards, IDs and the cell phone.

A Dunst spokesman and a SoHo Grand manager did not immediately return telephone messages left at their offices early Friday.

Dunst, 25, has starred as the superhero's love interest in all three installments so far of the "Spider-Man" series. She also played the title role in director Sofia Coppola's 2006 take on the life of Marie Antoinette, among other film roles. People magazine named her one of the world's 50 most beautiful people in 2002.
