Man arrested on suspicion of terrorism activities in Britain

British police arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of buying weapons for use in international terrorism, according to authorities.

An armed squad arrested the 28-year-old suspect following an investigation involving the intelligence services, London's Metropolitan Police said. He was detained in South Mimms, north of London.

Police provided few details, but said the arrest was not linked to the July 7 bombings of London's transportation system that killed 56, including four suspected suicide bombers.

The suspect is from east London, and police said they were searching homes in the Waltham Forest and Newham neighborhoods of east London. They said the searches were expected to continue for some time, but that they had not discovered any hazardous materials.

A police spokeswoman declined to specify what kind of weapons the suspect was believed to have bought, the AP reports.
