The widow of Christopher Reeve, making first public appearance since lung cancer diagnosis

Dana Reeve, the widow of "Superman" star Christopher Reeve, hopes to raise $2 million for her late husband's foundation at a fund-raising dinner Thursday her first public appearance since announcing three months ago she has lung cancer.

Reeve, 44, always planned to attend the gala, said Maggie Goldberg, spokeswoman for the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation.

"She's feeling great and has a good prognosis," Goldberg said. "She's still chairwoman of the board, still very active in the foundation."

Friends and supporters of the actress including Paul Newman, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close were expected to attend, and the Christopher Reeve Spirit of Courage Award was to be awarded to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Dana Reeve won worldwide admiration for the support of her husband, the star of the "Superman" movies, during his nine years as a quadriplegic following a spinal cord injury. Christopher Reeve died last year.

In August, Dana Reeve announced the lung cancer diagnosis and said, "I hope before too long to be sharing news of my good health and recovery", AP reports.
