Family of Brazilian killed by London police meets investigators

The family of an innocent Brazilian man killed by police who mistook him for a terrorist met Thursday with an independent investigative body and saw videotapes of the incident.

Undercover police shot and killed electrician Jean Charles de Menezes, 27, aboard an Underground train on July 22, a day after four failed attempts to bomb the city's transport system. The dead man's parents and other family members, on their third day in London, met with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

His brother Giovani said the tapes the family saw while meeting the Independent Police Complaints Commission supported their belief that police have lied about the case.

"The film showed that Jean did not have suspicious behavior. For sure they (police) lied to the family," he told reporters.

Harriet Wistrich, a lawyer representing the family, read a statement to reporters, saying that the family had seen the surveillance camera images recovered from the Stockwell Underground station in London where de Menezes was killed, the AP reports.

"Jean loved London, it was his home. We want to thank all the people in London who have supported us and the warm welcome we have received," the statement said.
