Chievo goalkeeper Alberto Fontana previously had denied two acrobatic attempts by Trezeguet and one low drive by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, on loan from AC Milan as a replacement injured Gianluigi Buffon, was never threatened by Chievo forwards. French defender Jonathan Zebina limped off the field after a few minutes and was replaced by Gianluca Pessotto.

Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko replied five minutes after defender Mirko Cudini had given Ascoli the lead, saving Milan from an embarrassing opening-round loss on a rain-soaked field.
Cudini kicked in a rebound to give the Serie A newcomer the lead in the 58th.
Shevchenko missed a winner a few minutes after his equalizer, kicking wide from a close range.

He received a standing ovation as he was substituted in the closing minutes.
