Ipsos-Reid company questioned people in ten countries of the world to find out what virtues they appreciated with the opposite sex. Respondents were offered to estimate the importance of the four virtues: sense of humor, empathy and ability to accept other people's views, visual appeal and financial status.
People in majority of countries particularly appreciate sense of humor with the opposite sex. However, the situation is quite different in Russia where only 14 per cent of women and 15 per cent of men say sense of humor matters. Englishwomen think sense of humor is particularly important with men - 55 per cent, while 38 per cent of Englishmen say this characteristics is important with women. 45 per cent of women and 44 per cent of men in Canada think sense of humor is important with the opposite sex. 38 per cent of women and 44 per cent of men share the same opinion in the US.
France, Germany and India are the countries where people highly appreciate empathy. 70 per cent of French women and 65 per cent of French men, 51 per cent of American women and 44 per cent of American men, 43 per cent of Russian women and 59 per cent of Russian men say this characteristic is of great importance.
Russians and Chinese turned out to be more mercantile: they say money is the most important factor with the opposite sex. 32 per cent of Chinese women and 7 per cent of Chinese men, 29 per cent of Russian women and 4 per cent of Russian men say it is an important factor. At that, only 1 per cent of France's respondents say the factor matters at all.
Visual appeal turned out to be the least important factor; it is particular important for Japanese only where 12 per cent of women and 23 per cent of men say it is important what physical characteristics their partners have. France is the country where people are not inclined to focus on physique of the opposite sex.
