Russian fighting recognized in Russia as a type of sport

At the Russian State Committee for Sports, the third session of the commission for recognising new types of sport has recognised Russian fighting as a type of sport.

Russian fighting is a kind of biathlon - a sportsman has to overcome a special area of obstacle - throwing knives and shooting at the same time. Then, without resting, he has to take part in a fight on the ring.

A new type of sport is being actively developed in the power structures and in sports clubs in the forty-seven subjects of the Russian Federation. Since 1998, four championships of Russia in Russian fighting have been held, four championships between the educational establishments of the Interior Ministry, three championships among the Russian Interior Ministry Troops, the European Cup Championships and two world championships. At the international competitions in this type of sport Russian athletes have won seventeen Gold Medals.

The fifth Russian fighting championships will take place in Moscow, in September 2002. The third world championships will be held on November 7-10. It is expected that athletes from thirty countries will take part in it.

The President of the Russian Fighting Federation of Russia is Sergei Novikov, Olympic champion in judo and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences.
