Match of the Century: Russia vs. World

The "Chess Match of the Century" between Russia's national team and the World Team will be held in Moscow From September 8 through 12 this year. This is according to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the President of the World Chess Federation, FIDE.

According to him, the members of each team will number 10. By this time such Grand Masters as Ponomaryov, Anand, Topalov, Gelfand, Shirov, Polgar have agreed to participate. The participants of the World Team represent India, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Israel, Hungary, Spain, and China. Each contestant will play 10 games, one against each player of the other team. Mr. Ilyumzhinov said 162 national chess federations had supported the Match of the Century.

Andrei Selivanov, the President of the Chess Federation of Russia and the leader of the Russian national team, said it will include Vladimir Kramnik, Garry Kasparov, Evgeny Bareyev, Alexander Grishchuk, Anatoly Karpov, and others.

Previously, Russia's national chess team twice met with the World Team, in Belgrade in 1970, then in London in 1984, winning both times
