The scandal around the sequel of The Lord of the Rings

Over a thousand of movie fans set out their dissatisfaction with the title of the second part of the movie The Lord of the Rings, having noticed a hint to the terror attack of September 11. The sequel of the movie is titled The Two Towers. A group of movie fans, who call themselves “Impressed by September 11,” sent a letter to director Peter Jackson, and to New Line Cinema company, asking to change the title to “something less offensive.” It was in particular said: “The title is clearly meant to refer to the attacks on the World Trade Center. In this post-September 11 world, it is unforgiveable that this should be allowed to happen.” The petition was undersigned by 1200 people.

As a matter of fact, the second book of Tolkien’s trilogy is carrying the same title, but the authors of the petition were not satisfied with such a detail, they want the title of the movie sequel to be changed. Director Peter Jackson said that he has been thinking about that too after the tragedy of September 11, but he decided not to do it, since “Tolkien’s fans would kill us.”
