World Cup: France chooses its team

Defending world champions France are finalising the squad for Korea/Japan for the 2002 World Cup.

Manager Roger Lemerre is in the process of picking his squad of 23 players to take to the finals, which start for France on 31st May against Senegal in Seoul, the South Korean capital.

Out is 31-year-old Christian Karembeu, who is injured but the basis for the squad will be the team which won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000. The probable list will be:

Goalkeepers: Barthez, Rame and Coupet; Defenders: Thuram, Leboeuf, Desailly, Lizerazu, Silvestre, Candela, Sagnol and Christianval; Midfielders: Vieira, Makelele, Petit, Boghossian, Zidane, Djorkaeff, Micoud, Dugarry; Forwards: Henry, Wiltord, Trezeguet, Cisse.
