Intellectuals of the city of Ulyanovsk ashamed for Ё letter of Russian alphabet

Teachers of Ulyanovsk schools and colleges, as well as Orthodox priests have sent a letter to the regional parliament, with protests against establishing in the city Ё letter momorial. As well known, in Ulyanovsk (former Simbirsk) Russian writer and historian N.Karamzin lived who proposed to introduce the letter into the Russian alphabet for signing two sounds [j] and [o]. The letter was actively used, though modern editions seems to neglect it while managing to do without this letter. Ulyanovsk historian Sergei Petrov feeling sorry for the letter’s tragic fate proposed to decorate the city with the unusual monument. While the indignant Ulyanovsk intellectuals explain their position with the fact that namely with Ё letter the most indecent words of Russian language start, so they are afraid people would consider the monument to be official approval of Russian absence language.
