Terrorist Sentenced To Life-time Imprisonment For Explosion In Makhachkala, Escaped

Terrorist Timurlan Aliyev escaped in the early hours of Saturday from the centre of temporary detention in the town of Buinaksk in Dagestan (Northern Caucusus,) sources in the republic's Interior Ministry reported. Aliyev is a member of the group of terrorists sentenced for the lifetime imprisonment for committing a terror act in the capital of Dagestan in September 1998. As a result of the explosion, approximately 20 people died, dozens were wounded, residential houses and other buildings were destroyed. Aliyev had been delivered to the Buinaksk detention centre for giving testimony on another case concerning large-scale misappropriation of funds of the Dagestani Department of the Russian Pensions Fund. Republic's law-enforcement bodies have taken extraordinary measures in Buinaksk and other towns of the republic after the escape of the dangerous criminal. A source in republic's Interior Ministry did not rule out that "the escape of the criminal was a result of the treachery of those responsible for his detention."
