Beijing elected King of Toilets

Olympic athletes in 2008 will benefit from the investment of 4.8 billion USD since 1997, which Beijing spent on refurbishing its public toilets, previously criticised as being abominable, having no privacy and being basically of the hole-in-the-ground type.

The WTS meeting in Singapore was favourably impressed with the documentation presented by the Beijing authorities, which indicate that there are 200 strategically-placed five-star latrines in the city.

Beijing claimed that this policy will be continued over the next three years, before the next World Toilet Society meeting in 2004, in Beijing. It is claimed that 741 more luxury toilets are to be constructed in 148 places of interest.
