Russian Academy Of Sciences Receives Condolences In Connection With Decease Of Outstanding Physicist Alexander Prokhorov

The Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of General Physics receive condolences from scientists all over the world in connection with the decease of outstanding physicist, Nobel Prize winner Academician Alexander Prokhorov, reported on Tuesday the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Alexander Prokhorov was a member of the Academies of Sciences of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and of many other countries. The scientist will be buried on Friday on the historical Novodevichye Cemetery in Moscow. Yesterday, on January 7, the academician was brought to the Central Kremlin Hospital with the acute double pneumonia. The urgent measures taken by the doctors to save the life of the scientist proved to be fruitless: the disease developed very rapidly. The academician died on Tuesday morning. The 85-year-old scientist was the honorary director of the Institute of General Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences which he founded and headed for a number of years. For twenty years Alexander Prokhorov headed the department of general physics and astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences and supervised the work of sectoral and academic institutes. One of the founders of the world quantum electronics, he was twice conferred upon the highest title in the Soviet Union - Hero of Socialist Labour, and also won the State and Lenin Prizes. He was elected President of the Engineering Academy of the Russian Federation. The latest works of Academician Alexander Prokhorov are connected with the development of quantum physics and fibre optics and with the use of these up-to-date achievements of modern physics in practice.
