Russia notches up third big win in junior ice hockey championship

Sunday saw two matches at the junior world ice hockey championship (for under 19s), which is currently being held in Canada, involving the tournament favorites.

In Group A, Russia recorded its third major victory by beating Belarus 5:1, matching their in over the current champions, the Americans, in their first match.

In the Belarus match, Alexei Kaigorodov, Alexander Perezhogin, Igor Grigorenko, Andrei Taratukhin and Alexander Polushin stood out in Rafail Ishmatov's young side.

In Group B, Canada beat Germany 4:1, though it should be pointed out that the Germans managed to score their first goal in three attempts.

Accordingly, the Canadians and the Russians lead their respective groups with a maximum six points.

The next match will be on New Year's Eve when Russia takes on Switzerland.
