Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia sends greeting message to 7th World Russian National Council

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II has called for "reviving labour and business ethics." In a message of greetings which he sent to the participants in the 7th World Russian National Council gathering in Moscow Monday, the patriarch emphasised that "it is of vital importance for Russia to revive labour and business ethics, to orient itself to creative, effective labour and to helping the fellow creatures, especially those who are unable to make their living." He continued, "the Orthodox Church blesses any labour aimed at helping neighbours and meeting Christian moral norms." The patriarch expressed his regret over the fact that "in our times, the hierarchy of public values is more often based on the profit they yield alongside the increasing indifference to one's spiritual state." He stressed that "economic processes often entail a deep moral crisis, oblivion and even rejection of the God-blessed moral norms. There is an obvious growth of consumer sentiments breeding selfishness, callousness, injustice and cruelty." The head of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed his conviction that "the future belongs to the ideals of fair and highly moral society," and that "this council will help us realise this." Unfortunately, the patriarch failed to attend this Orthodox forum for health reasons. He is undergoing a rehabilition treatment after a serious disease. However, the Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Kirill assured that the head of the Russian Orthodox Church had been "looking forward to attending the council."
