Russia is stricken off the list of candidates to host 2008 European Soccer Cup

According to preliminary reports from the Austrian soccer federation with reference to the UEFA decisions, Russia was stricken off the list of candidates to host the 2008 European Soccer Cup.

Sources in the UEFA headquarters reported that, according to the federation, Russia, Hungary, Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina were out of the further competition for the right to hold EURO-2008.

The remaining contenders include Austria-Switzerland, Scotland-Ireland, Greece-Turkey and Scandinavian countries. Prior to adoption of the final decision the list will be reduced to the so-called "short list" with only two candidates left.

The Austrian soccer federation is of the opinion that the major rivals will be Austria-Switzerland and Scotland-Ireland. According to Austrian experts, Vienna and Bern have the best chances.

The UEFA executive committee consisting of 14 people had to announce its choice before 11 December and to name the winner who will become the future host of the European Soccer Cup in 2008.
