Honorable Citizen rank conferred to Kurosawa posthumously

The Duma of the city of Arsenyev in Russia’s Far East passed a decision that is to be the most curious over the whole history of lawmaking in Russia, and probably in the world as well. Deputies conferred the rank of an honorable citizen of Arsenyev to Akiro Kurosawa, the classic of the world cinematography posthumously.

The famous producer passed away four years ago. This rank is designed to correct a mistake made in 1975, when the classic arrived to the city to shoot his famous film Dersu Uzala. However, for ideological reasons the rank of honorable citizens of Arsenyev had been conferred then only to Soviet actors who performed the key roles, Yury Solomin and Maxim Mundzuk. Two years ago Kurosawa’s son visited the Far Eastern city to shoot a documentary about his father. Probably, that visit incited the city deputies to confer the honorable citizen rank to the famous film producer.

Currently, Arsenyev deputies are searching for relatives of Kurosawa to inform them of the new rank that is now among other honorable awards, including Oscar for Dersu Uzala, conferred during his life. Until relatives are found, the regalia are to be stored at the museum of the city history. By the way, a decision on conferring the honorable rank to Kurosawa has been lobbied in the city Duma for about two years.
