Mikhail Malyshev, Infamous Perm Cannibal, Dies During Medical Visit

Russian Cannibal Collapses and Dies in Clinic

Mikhail Malyshev, the notorious criminal known as the “Perm Cannibal,” died during a visit to a local outpatient clinic in Perm, according to Ura.ru.

The outlet reports that Malyshev collapsed and died instantly inside the clinic on Lipatova Street. He had arrived for a scheduled medical appointment and fell in the lobby before seeing a doctor.

Earlier reports stated that after his release from prison, Malyshev—whose crimes shocked the entire region—had found work at a shelter for homeless animals.

Malyshev spent 23 years in prison for murders committed with extreme brutality.

The Story of the Perm Cannibal

Mikhail Malyshev became one of the most infamous criminals in Perm in the late 1990s, when a series of disappearances and brutal murders led investigators to his apartment. His crimes, committed over several years, shocked even experienced law enforcement officers.

According to court records, Malyshev committed at least two proven murders between 1999 and 2000, although investigators long suspected that the true number of victims may have been higher. The killings were marked by exceptional cruelty and followed a similar pattern.

With the help of a female accomplice, Malyshev lured victims—often acquaintances or people in vulnerable circumstances—to his home. There, he murdered them, dismembered their bodies, and stored the remains in refrigerators. During a search of his apartment, police found two refrigerators containing both human remains and dog meat.

The investigation established that Malyshev consumed the flesh of his victims and used it to prepare food. He cooked various dishes, including dumplings and meat pies, and in some cases allegedly served them to others without disclosing their origin.

In 2001, Malyshev was arrested and later convicted of murder and abuse of corpses. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Details of the case were widely covered by the media, earning him the nickname “the Perm Cannibal.”

After serving his full sentence, Malyshev was released and returned to Perm in 2022. His return to public life attracted renewed attention when it became known that he had found work at a shelter for homeless animals. His sudden death during a visit to a clinic has now brought a grim end to one of the most notorious criminal cases in the region’s recent history.
