First sambo wrestling championship of security troops of Interior Ministry of Russia to begin in Omsk (Siberia)

A sambo wrestling championship of the security troops of the Interior Ministry of Russia is beginning for the first-ever time in Omsk (Siberia) today. The competition will be held on November 13th-14th.

As RIA Novosti was told in the press centre of the Mayor's Office of Omsk, more than 130 athletes from all the security troops districts, military institutes, operational divisions and Rus commando detachment (Moscow) will participate in the competition.

Today sambo wrestling is becoming one of the most popular sports in Russia, and is practised especially widely among the servicemen of the security troops. Precisely they fulfil service-combat missions to protect public order and public security in all the constituents of the Russian Federation.

Sambo (self-defence without arms) is a wrestling style based on the most effective holds of different national styles of wrestling. It emerged in the U.S.S.R. in the 1930s. It has been an Olympic sport since 1980, the championships of Europe in it have been staged since 1972, and of the world - since 1973.
