NTT Communications, a subsidiary of Japan's largest telecommunications company, has probably leaked the personal data of 4 million people, Japanese TV channel NHK said Thursday.

NTT officials announced that on Tuesday, 23 July, traces of illegal entry were detected on the servers of its branch company OCN. It was also said that there was special software used to obtain personal data and passwords of the users.

Specialists of the company said that thanks to the encryption of passwords, the probability for cybercriminals to use them is minimal. OCN staff personally informed all owners of the data of the problem and asked them to change passwords.

OCN is the most important provider of Internet services in Japan. The number of its customers exceeds 7 million people.
