Pew Research think tank published a report, according to which women act as breadwinners in four out of every ten American families, The Washington Post reports.

This is largely due to the economic decline in the country and the growing number of single mothers. Thus, the traditional family model in the United States has significantly changed during the recent decades. For example, in 1960, four percent of married women earned more than their husbands did. In 2011, this number increased to 15 percent. The number of single mothers during the same period of time increased from 7 to 25 percent.
