Ice arena to be built in Nizhny Novgorod

Director General of the hockey club Torpedo, Andrei Osipenko, said at a press conference on September 12 said that there would be a new ice arena built in Nizhny Novgorod. The sports facility will be built within the scope of a public and private partnership.

According to Osipenko, the plot of the land for the stadium is currently being cleared near Komsomolskaya Square. The stadium, which will become the home one to the Nizhny Novgorod hockey club, will be built on the money of a private investor. Local authorities continue negotiations with the investor. The Government of the Nizhny Novgorod region will handle the connection of the new ice arena to all necessary city networks.

As the director of Torpedo Club said, when calculating the desired capacity of the new stadium (15,000 people), Nizhny Novgorod was compared with Minsk, as the interest of the general public in ice hockey in both cities was about the same level. "In Minsk, there is a similar arena, the average attendance of matches is 10-11 thousand people. Playoff matches gather up to 15 thousand fans. With reasonable pricing policy in the Nizhny Novgorod, the attendance of games will be at the same level," said Osipenko.
