Vampire skeletons uncovered in Bulgaria

Bulgarian archeologists uncovered two human skeletons that had been pierced with iron rods. The bizarre finding was made in Sozopol. Bozhidar Dimitrov, the head of the National Historical Museum, told reporters that the skeletons were found last weekend.

It is hard to say whether the owners of those skeletons could drink blood. However, the finding testifies to the practice, which was used in Bulgarian villages right till the first decade of the 20th century. According to pagan beliefs, the hearts of evil people would have their chests and hearts pierced with iron rods during their funeral. People would also nail up their coffins not to let the dead return for the blood of the living, Interfax reports.

According to the historian, such skeletons were first found several years ago. The custom used to be common in other Balkan countries, such as Serbia. Archeologist Petar Balabanov said that he found six skeletons like that in Serbia in 2004. The human remains dated from the IV century.
